Porto is northern Portugal's vibrant capital and the starting point for some of Europe's most underrated road trips. The Douro Valley, the wild Minho coast, and the mountainous interior are all within easy reach, and having a car lets you explore at a pace that public transport simply cannot match. Porto itself is walkable, so plan to pick up your car when you are ready to head out of the city.
Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) is Porto's only airport, located 11 km north of the city center in Maia. All major rental companies have desks in the arrivals hall, and the airport is well connected to the city by metro (Line E, Violet). Rental rates in Porto are among the most affordable in Western Europe, typically 20-30% cheaper than Lisbon. A weekly rental in shoulder season can be as low as €60-€80. Consider picking up at the airport on the day you leave Porto, as parking in the city center is unnecessary for exploring the city itself.
Porto is built on steep hills overlooking the Douro River, and the old town streets are narrow, cobblestoned, and sometimes barely wide enough for a single car. If you must drive in the center, be prepared for steep gradients that can challenge clutch control — an automatic transmission is highly recommended. The Ribeira quarter along the waterfront is pedestrianized, and many streets in the Vitória and Sé neighborhoods are one-way with confusing routing.
The drive from Porto into the Douro Valley is one of Europe's great road trips. Take the N-222 along the north bank of the Douro, widely regarded as one of the most scenic roads in the world. The route winds through terraced vineyards and past wine estates (quintas) for over 200 km. Stop at Peso da Régua for the Douro Museum and lunch, then continue to Pinhão, the heart of the port wine region, where the train station is decorated with blue and white azulejo tiles depicting the wine harvest.
Portuguese highways (autoestradas) are excellent but expensive. The A1 from Porto to Lisbon (300 km) costs about €22 in tolls. Many rental companies offer a Via Verde transponder for automatic toll payment — this is strongly recommended, as some toll roads in northern Portugal have no physical toll booths. Speed limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 100 km/h on IPs (main roads), 90 km/h on national roads, and 50 km/h in towns. Speed cameras are common.
Fuel costs around €1.65-€1.80 per liter. Portuguese fuel stations along motorways are expensive — fill up at hypermarket stations (Pingo Doce, Continente, Intermarché) for savings of €0.10-€0.15 per liter. Drink-driving laws are strict with a 0.5 g/l limit, and roadside checks are common, especially on weekend nights.
For day visits to the city center, use Parking Trindade near the main metro interchange or Parking Batalha near the eastern edge of the old town. Rates are very reasonable compared to other Western European cities. For free parking, try the waterfront at Foz do Douro near the coast, then take bus 500 along the river into the center. Avoid leaving valuables visible in your car, particularly in tourist parking areas near the Ribeira.

Traffic note: Porto's historic center features steep, narrow cobblestone streets that can be challenging for unfamiliar drivers. The Ribeira waterfront area is largely pedestrianized. Traffic across the Ponte Luís I bridge is restricted to one lane of cars on the upper deck (the lower deck is for trams and pedestrians). Rush hour traffic on the VCI (Via de Cintura Interna) ring road is heavy from 8:00-9:30 and 17:30-19:00. Portuguese drivers tend to be fast on highways but patient in urban settings. Watch for trams on Rua do Carmo and in the Ribeira area. Many central streets are steep enough to make hill starts challenging — consider an automatic transmission.
